……to all who attended last night’s meeting, to Trespa for hosting, and to Ira Frazin for organizing. Thanks, also, to Nemetschek NA and extragroup for making the great bundles of code which are why we have meetings in the first place.

I’ll be presenting at the next New York City Vectorworks User Group meeting. Text of the announcement from Ira Frazin, the group leader:
Thursday, December 3rd, 6:30-8:00 pm
The topic for our next meeting will be 3D modeling and detailing of interiors using some basic 3D tools of Vectorworks, along with a brief introduction to some of the additional tools available with Vectorworks interiorcad, a 3rd party plug-in.
The speaker is Gytis Simaitis. He uses VWi in an active architectural casework and millwork production environment at Pier Head Associates LTD and has started a new venture, Matteawan Design Works.
Trespa Design Center at 62 Greene Street (between Spring & Broome), ground floor beverages will be served
.
In my workflow, I use multiple co-extant (Stacked) design layers to isolate various areas or elevations. For instance: a kitchen will have design layers dedicated to each cardinal direction (Casework Model-North, Casework Model-East, etc.)
The layers will have the same Z-value, unless there is a floor elevation change or I want to isolate, say, wall units. It is conceptually different than the typical VW Architect workflow, where Z and ΔZ are used to “build” a building upwards, from footing, to foundation, to first floor slab, to first floor walls, etc.
The organization will vary by project , as sometimes cardinals alone don’t make sense, or are too much info, depending on the scope of the work. Sometimes it is simply this: Casework Model- Bedroom HVAC Enclosure (though I would typically abbreviate even more). Whatever works, man.
There are many advantages, in my opinion, to “complicate” with this layer organization in addition to class organization—but I ain’t goin there now.
The point I wish to make is my unfettered excitement for the new Unified View feature in VWi2010 which allow Show/Snap/ MODIFY across Unified (formerly Stacked) layers. It saves so much mousing/clicking not having to navigate to other layers to edit related things. VWi2009 and earlier only allow Shop/Snap when layers are stacked. I did a lot of Right Click>Activate Layer.
Yiiiiiiihaaaaahhhh! Thanks NNA.
I’m rebuilding my customized workspaces and templates for VW2010 from the ground up. Not a joyous task, but de-cruftification is a worthwhile venture for reaping future gains
